Guidelines for effective posting and responding
Posting
Because blogging is done via the internet, it is of great importance that you represent yourself accurately and in the best possible light. In order to do so, follow these simple guidelines.
1. Type your blog entry into Microsoft Word or another word processor and then simply copy and paste into your blog post. This way, you will have an automatic spell and grammar check.
2. Do not use slang or "texting" language when posting. It makes you appear unintelligent and childish. Always post in complete sentences with correct grammer. See Rule #1.
3. Always re-read your post before going "live" with it. Make sure that it conveys what you meant. Sometimes we write what is in our head, but it can come across the wrong way. You don't want that to happen. You could also have a parent, sibling, or friend proof read before you live post.
4. For this class, make sure that you always completely cover the prompt. While I don't give strict length requirements, sufficiently answering a prompt can never be done with a few sentences. At the very least, all posts should run a very healthy paragraph, many times more than that.
5. As is probably assumed, all blog posts need to be free of profanity or other inappropriate material.
Responding to Someone Else's Post
Responding to another person's blog posting is meant to start a conversation and improve in-depth thinking. In order to achieve this, follow the guidelines given below.
1. Be respectful and professional. Even if you disagree with the blogger, do so in a respectful manner. Responding in any other way will make you look like the "bad guy" in addition to appearing uneducated and ignorant.
2. Do not use slang or "texting" language.
3. Always offer points for further discussion. This can be based on something the blogger said, or a related topic that you belief could be included in the post.
4. Your response does not need to be nearly as long as the original post, but a response of one or two sentences is too short.
5. In order to try and get comments on everyone's postings, please do not comment on a posting that already has two comments (not including Mr. Vliek's). In addition, please choose a different classmate to respond to every week. Step out of your comfort zone and try to understand somebody else's point of view.
